Looking for a dog? Please Read!

A note from one of our current ATS spouses. If you can help this family...let them know!....

Hello everyone! As you can see, we really do need your help!! As you all know, Cooper is our little Westie, and unfortunately, he has to go to a new home without children. We would love to be able to give him to someone we know and feel really comfortable with (it would be great, if we could still see him every once in awhile, too!, but not necessary)....I'm saying this all matter of fact like, but believe me I have shed many a tear since Wednesday. I feel like we are giving a part of our family away!! It breaks my heart terribly!! We already had a guy come over Friday night who is interested in taking Cooper, he's a nice guy and we can go with him, but just wanted to put feelers out to more people to see if there is an even better fit -- this guy is a friend of a friend of a friend, so it's quite a distant connection. Would love to give him to someone we know a little more, just for our peace of mind.

Do you know someone who would be interested in Cooper? Just to give you some info, Cooper is a West Highland Terrier, will be 6 on March 8. He's loveable, loves to be cuddled and his belly to be rubbed! He does love to bark, but what terrier doesn't! He is house trained, and we have trained him to stay in the house for hours at a time (so he will go good with those who work all day). He will be better being the center of a attention, ideally no other dogs and especially no cats. He is not a mean dog, just gets protective when he doesn't know others are playing, so this is the reason why he is better not to be in a home with children, because sadly little Stanley got bit by Cooper on Wednesday. He was a trooper, and mommy and daddy were more traumatized than him!! But, we just can't live in the tension and wondering if he will do it again, unfortunately he has nipped before. But, like I said, he really is not a mean dog, protective tho. I hate even typing these words, we thought Cooper would be with us through all our children, so this is so sad for us, but we have to do what is best for our family.

Do you know someone who would want a great dog for a Christmas present? We would be willing to make a road trip for the right home, so please if you know someone who is interested, please have them call 859-887-3095, 614-306-4112, and 419-674-6506 right away. Since we do have this guy who is interested, any recommendations brought to us by Monday morning, would be great! We can send a pic message by phone to someone who may want it!

Thanks everyone, sounds silly to ask for prayer for us, but we need it, it's just very sad! Please help Cooper find a good home!!

Love,
Kendra, Eric, Stanley, and Cooper

Recapping Couple's Connect

The last Couple's Connect, on Nov. 16th, opened an avenue of sharing with one another that we would like to continue to foster.

Here's a recap of the night ~
We began together under the premise of Galatians 6:2, "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." This night was about our individual wounds within the context of our marriage and community. We shared a moment of silence, to simply sit with one another and then we broke out into group of men and women. There, we entered into an invitation from James 5:16, "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." We listened to testimonies of God's work in people's life to help them face their wounds and receive healing. Each of us had the opportunity to then safely share our burden as we wrote it down and slipped it into a bag. That bag was passed around and we read each one, acknowledging and receiving them collectively. We were given the chance to draw what a symbol of freedom and reconciliation would look like in our lives as we ended that small group time together. We came back and sang in worship to the God who is mighty to save and read a number of Scriptures that speak of the truth we are trying to abide in. We capped off the night with delicious desserts and joyful fellowship. Each couple represented left with their choice of either book: Dr. Seamand's, Wounds that Heal or a redeemable gift certificate for Dan Allender's, The Healing Path to continue together what happened that night.

ps - Dan Allender's books are now available in the Spouse & Family office at the student center at community life. Just bring your gift certificate to redeem.

Couple's Connect coming Monday!

boy meets girl.

boy marries girl.
boy then wonders how his beauty turned into a beast.

girl hands boy the mirror for an equally shocking discovery.

The fairytale ending is classic: "and then they lived happily ever after." But there's a few pages missing from all those storybooks...pages that somehow got cut from the fantasy edition...pages that go right before that familiar line.

Now, what could those missing pages contain? Probably the same things we don't tend to share with other people - wounds, fears, fights, mistakes, regrets, roadblocks...drama with the in-laws, having to sleep on the couch, swearing in front of the kids, going to counseling, having the electricity turned off - you get the picture, you live there too. We all live there, in a place called reality.

And this coming Monday night, we'll all be in it together. Three brave couples are sharing parts of their story, precious, treasured, vulnerable parts of their story. They are sharing how God moved in their marriage through what they encountered in life.

Marriage is often a place of revelation. That can be both irritating, joyous & hopeful. We see the side of us that really is a beast, even if this realization comes after we point the finger at our spouse. But, redemption is full of beauty. The Lord wastes nothing and works with the power to transform anything...and He will if we let Him have His way. Here's to facing risk, truth and the relationship we have with God, our spouse and this community.

See you Monday night!

A God of Second Chances

Their marriage shattered.

They were divorced for 11 years.

What He orchestrated changed what they thought about themselves, marriage and God - forever.

Hear their story. Grow hope - for your marriage &
for other couples you can provide support for.

Clint and Penny Bragg are sharing their miraculous story of healing and hope. They discovered a God of second chances and they will challenge you to see hope for every marriage at every stage. They now follow a call to speak into the lives of couples across the country. Raising their own funds, they embark on 40-day trips of ministry throughout the year to share their message of God's reconciliation.

Not only is this a way to build on your marriage, whether you need some refreshment or a total restoration but this will also be a great experience for building a foundation to minister to other couples.

Kids are Cool!

Imagine this…a table set with cupcakes, both vanilla and chocolate frosting. Next to them, an assortment of Capri Suns to drink. Mix with that about 25 college girls…and you’ve got yourself a Childcare Worker Orientation! The SFM team gathered with this large group last Tuesday night for about an hour. We filled out paperwork, snacked together, and shared cute stories about all the little kids that love to be downstairs.

Now, most of you know that I have an invested interest in the Childcare Area because my own three little ones are often down there. Let me tell you…from a mother’s heart…we’ve got the cream of the crop working for us! These college ladies are amazing! They are excited! They loved meeting the new kids last week during NSO and can’t wait to see the rest of the Seminary babies! It was sweet to see my son, Nate, run in and see a few of his favorite workers – hugs were shared and my heart was warmed. Nate left calling it his “new school”. Love it!

I just wanted to share with you that we are off to a great start in the Childcare Area. The workers are ready to meet your sweet children. The kids are ready to play with each other. We hope to see you and your smiling children downstairs soon!

The Roots have Spread...

This summer sure has been filled with lots of transitions, students and staff alike!

It has been and continues to be a time for the roots to run deep and strengthen. Growth is evident and we're excited for the fruit this year will produce.

As we welcome new families to the seminary, we all are looking forward to the start of a new season together. We can't wait to share stories with you all!!

Many of you already know that we are celebrating with Erin Crisp who has accepted a teaching position in Fayette County this coming year. She served as a phenomenal leader for the Spouse & Family Team this past year and we are not-so-secretly jealous of the eighth grade students who will now be the recipients of her gifts. She'll always be part of the SFM family, now getting to be a full fledged participant! And Erin, we'll save a seat for you at anything you want to volunteer at... :)

Stepping up into the position of Spouse & Family Director is our own Sarah Jackson. She has served the last 3 years as the Student Services Coordinator in Community Life. She and her husband, Jason, have been involved with SFM since beginning their seminary journey. In this transition, the position has become full time (YAY!!) and she'll be keeping regular office hours so stop by and say hello as you pass through the lobby of the Student Center. We're excited to have Sarah "officially" join the team.

With Spouse & Family kick-off events just a couple weeks away, we'll be posting more updates and resources to the blog so you can stay informed. Check your snailmail too for a mailing that includes information on all the programs we'll be offering this fall. But, more than anything, we'd love to talk with you in person and connect too.

You're loved & you're being prayed for.

love * grow * worship

Summer

Our spring semester draws to a close with Consecration this Monday night. We want to provide opportunities for folks to share community over the summer and to welcome in new families as they arrive. We have two main streams of thinking here.

1. Transition Team: many of you have already volunteered to be on our transition team of couples who will be working to meet, greet and welcome new families over the summer.

2. All are invited gatherings (not the technical term but I'm makin' in work here): Planning to go to a Legends game? Let us know, we'll post the details and welcome other families to meet you there. Nicholasville pool on an afternoon? Contact our office at least 3 days in advance so that we can get word out. Eating at La Hacienda or Sonny's? Maybe others would like to join you. Let us know and we'll open it up to others. Picnic? Yard saling? Frisbee golf? Grilling out? Icthus park? Golf? Museum? Short road trip? Whatever you think others might enjoy, let us know and we'll get the word out. If people don't show up that's OK. You were planning on going anyway right? And if you're sitting around wishing you had something to do with someone, take advantage of some of these offers that are sure to arise throughout the summer. We'll post them here on the blog, and we'll send them out to the email list.

We would LOVE to get some things on the summer calendar right away as a resource for new families who will be arriving soon. Consider organizing an "all are invited gathering" anytime in June, July or August; simply email us the date, times, and location and we'll take care of posting it. I hope to see many of you around over the summer.

Playgroup is still meeting May 11th and 25th from 10:30-noon. The 25th they'll be meeting at the park because the student center will be closed.

Childcare Snacks!

Hello Parents! The Childcare Area is in need of snacks! There aren't that many dates left so we don't need a whole lot. A bag of goldfish, a box of graham crackers, or something like that would be great for our little ones to munch on while down there.
We also need 5 oz cups for the kiddos. If you have either of these needs around the house and would like to donate them - we'd appreciate it! You can bring them by the Childcare Area at any time - if no one is around, just place them on top of the cubbies. :)

Thanks for all you do!

Monday Night 4/20/09

"A longing fulfilled is a tree of life...a longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul."
Prov. 13:12 & 19

Everyone can use some sweetness for the soul. What would fulfill a longing for you this Monday night? Spouse and family wants your relationships and your existence to be one that is life-filled, growing, and becoming new. Examine your soul this weekend. Are there withered places? Are there bitter places? Are there tired, lonely, dry places?

We can't fulfill every longing through a program or event, but we can provide opportunities for life and sweetness. This Monday night, childcare will be available, and what you do with the time you have (6:30-8:30pm) is your choice, but please spend that time in a life-giving activity. Spend time alone, with a spouse, with your Fusion group or with a friend, but do something that fulfills a longing for you.

Kids Art

Calling all child artists! We need your help. For the Asbury Reader this fall we would like to use some kids' artwork. Parents, have your child draw, paint or color their depictions of the following ideas. We're taking submissions until April 20th. The artwork should be on paper no larger than 8.5 x 11 and should be dropped off at the spouse and family office in the student center.

We're looking for depictions of the Kingdom of God. Share the parable with your child, explain the image used in the parable and possibly show them some examples of the imagery (i.e mustard seeds etc.), then ask them to draw or paint their own depictions. The parables are as follows:
The Kingdom of heaven is like-
*leaven
*treasure hidden in a field
*a merchant seeking fine pearls
*a dragnet cast into the sea
*mustard seed
*a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure
*a king who wanted to settle accounts
*a landowner who went out early
*a king who prepared a wedding banquet

Thanks for your submissions! We can't guarantee publication of all artwork, but we appreciate everyone's effort, and drawing about the parable could be a great learning opportunity for your family.

Service Opportunity- 3/16/09

Wilmore Community Center needs our help!

Drop off your kids at childcare in the student center, then head over to the Wilmore Community Center. The entrance is just off the Police Station parking lot. From 6:30-8:30pm next Monday night, we will be packing away their winter clothing to send to a relief organization in Eastern Kentucky and putting out the spring/summer clothing on the racks. We need your help! Would you give two hours of your time with friends to serve a local organization that does so much for our community?

Contact our office if you have questions, but I hope to see you there!

Free Knit Fabric

A lady in the community has many bolts of t-shirt fabric that she would like to give away to someone who might have a use for them. She says they are perfect for making t-shirts and a regular sewing machine can be used with the addition of a needle for stretch fabric. If anyone can use this fabric, the lady's contact information is: Alma Blake # 858-0001. She can be reached after 3 pm Mon, Tues, Wed, and Friday. She lives right here in Wilmore and the fabric is being stored in a nearby storage facility. This would be a great project for a missions minded group of individuals.

ELL Group Leaders Needed

English Language Learner (ELL) Group Leaders
If you are a female and you grew up speaking English, we need you. Many of the wives of our international students have expressed a desire to learn conversational English. Would you consider giving 1.5 hours of your time every week or every other week, just 3 or 6 hours a month, in service to international spouses in our community? We will be meeting Thursday nights- 6:30-8:00pm and childcare is provided.

No preparation or special training is necessary. You would simply come to the class and follow the lead teacher's instructions. Your time would be spent practicing basic conversation skills with non-native English speakers while also building relationships with the same group of 2-3 women every week (or every other week). The time commitment would be either weekly or bi-weekly from February 19th until May 14th.

Imagine the difficulty of living in another culture, hundreds of miles away from home, being unable to communicate with many of the people in your environment. Contact Erin at Spouse and Family if you're interested in serving our international community in this way. 858-2315 or spouse@asburyseminary.edu

We have "The Creation Story" by John Audia, a short, hard cover picture book for children that includes sign language instructions for each day of hte story.
